Denying pensioners winter fuel allowance

Par Mizan (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 4th September 2024, 13:36

Disgusting!.....Well no sooner than when the Labour party got in they give big increases in cash for train drivers to keep the unions sweet, and then they removes £300 winter fuel allowance from millions of pensioners, which they need to keep warm in winter to survive.

At present we are waiting to see if a debate goes ahead in Parliament, and it seems PM Starmer wants to make it a three line whip to prevent a labour MP backlash, as many Labour and Conservative MP's are very angry at removing this allowance.

Now they go on about those on pension credit will get the cash, but if you have full state pension only with no private pension, then you are a tenner/week above the figure to qualify for pension credit, so millions just above the figure will not get the money.

Another factor is, if pensioners do not have the money they could freeze, they could die of hyperthermia, they could end up in hospital for weeks at roughly £2,500/week/per bed costs to the NHS and that's not including the treatment costs. So where are the savings Mr Starmer? Do you care if people die?

Lets hope this debate goes ahead, and common sense hopefully should dictate a reversal of this decision to remove the winter fuel payment.

So in conclusion, the Labour party are so called 'for the people'. Well they are not getting off to a good start, are they?

I remember the week after Blair took office, the Health Secretary Frank Dobson floated an idea about charging for GP appointments. That was a short honeymoon,  but it was an idea that was quickly forgotten.

This lot just want to be Tories, but without the sleaze. Too late for that too, given last week's news about that landlord MP renting out the sort of vermin infested accomodation that The Young Ones lived in.

Well sadly we have to live with decision of the voters, whether we like it or not... and I am in the NOT.

Watch the budget, motorists are going to be massively penalised, VEL premiums will go up... and we will see them look at road charging/mileage, so those of us who work, and need to travel, or have sick relatives that we care for, will be hit hard... 18000 miles last year in round trips for me as a carer!

Oh and don't forget, the review of 'Council Tax' banding, yes i know this was based on outdated figures... but if you think this isn't another opportunity to punish the workers/savers/home owners think again.

Then there will be a review of Capital Gains Tax/Inheritance Tax, again those that have worked/saved will get pummelled.

Labour always have been, and always will be about punishing workers, yet the Unions still seem to back them, probably as they get massive pay rises!

Sorry RANT over, it makes me extremely cross...

Giving everyone above a certain age, no matter how rich they are was wrong too.
Hopefully some of the savings can go towards the fortunes wasted on dodgy PPE contracts and so much more.
It appears the huge deficit wasn't spotted by the previous government because they'd generally not checked and adjusted many budgets or performed spending reviews for a couple of years.

Breaking news.....Commons leader Lucy Powell has announced the pensioners heating allowance will be debated on 10 September followed by a vote.

Just hope it is a free vote and not using the party whip, as PM Starmer must not win out to be able remove this allowance.

This talk of no money available is nonsense as The Government and previous Government can find billions of Pounds for tanks and armaments to be handed to Ukraine and Israel, also give billions away on overseas aid, but not help poor pensioners here. What a crazy world we live in.

Starmer must not be able to be a dictator and get away with things, as there are other hated things in the pipeline he wants to introduce as mentioned in above comments. For example the dreaded pay=per-mile tax he is wanting to introduce on cars. This is just another means of eventually taking cars away from the working people and get them on the bus and expensive trains. It would likely start at a low price per mile then over the years quickly run up to higher figures till we could not afford to run a car.

Starmer must be put in his place now, while we still have some sort of democracy.

As marksparks999  says in his comment, RANT OVER, but this new government is making me and many others worried already.

And so it continues...

Angela Rayner has confirmed there are no plans to raise English council taxes - but declined to say whether she'd scrap the single person discount to the bill.
