RE: Steptoe & Son - The Christmas Specials

Does that mean that the Christmas Specials in the Complete Steptoe and Son boxset are the cut versions too? I was thinking of buying this as a Christmas pressie for my stepdad, but is it perhaps worth hanging on until the full versions are issued?

Btw, are the cuts substantial?

I see. It seems a very convoluted way of getting a mention of the site in, but now I read it, the just happening to find a certain site does smell a wee bit spammy. First postings too.

Anyway, if you have a look on the Royal Mail site Sue, you`ll see about certificates of posting. I`ve been using them for ebay/amazon sales for a couple of years now and they`ve been a godsend, what with the amount of items that never arrive or arrive mangled. I imagine most of your parcels are going to be worth less £34 (just like mine), so they should offer all the cover you`ll need in most cases.

RE: selling online???

I hope that wasn`t directed at me :( I was just pointing out something that I thought was useful. I highlighted free because the post office try to con you into paying extra for recorded delivery which doesn`t really offer you any more cover than the free certificate of posting. And posties are pretty lax about getting things signed for anyway. Half the time they sign the recorded delivery receipts themselves, which given that someone has paid extra to get the item signed for, is a bit of a rip-off.

RE: selling online???

I guess the only answer to that is to send everything by insured post, but they don`t give you enough towards the postage for that! (So you make even less money).

Well, it does depend on the value of the item, but if it`s worth less than £34, just get a free certificate of posting and you should be covered if the item gets lost/damaged in the post. It seems to be easier to claim for lost items, but damaged items are okay as long as you can demonstrate the item was wrapped adequately.

RE: Tru Calling - The Complete Series 8 discs only £6.97 plus its in a 4 for the price of 3 offer

Well, unless amazon have changed their policy, you should be able to request a refund of the difference as they promise to do this if the price of an item goes down within thirty days of you ordering it. So no sniffy letter required and you should still get your 3 quid back :)

RE: Where do I stand on this?

Thanks everyone.. That does clarify things and its good to know that the onus is on them (so long as I`m not obstructive, which I wouldn`t be). I did toy with the idea of not mentioning the error to amazon, but I was pretty sure it would come to light when they checked in the boxset I returned.

I didn`t ask to be born...especially not in Essex!

Where do I stand on this?

Just a quick question: I recently bought three copies of the same boxset from amazon and one was damaged. I told amazon and returned the damaged boxset. Somehow amazon made a mistake and sent me out THREE replacement boxsets rather than just one. I`ve told amazon about this and they`ve just said that I have to post back the two unwanted boxsets via recorded delivery. To be honest though I don`t see why I should have to shell out money to return them (they will refund me, but it`s still annoying) and I don`t fancy wasting yet another lunch hour posting back items that they shouldn`t even have sent out to me. Given that the error is amazon`s, am I legally obligated to send them back? I have actually asked that they arrange for a courier to pick them up at a time convenient to me or that they compensate me for my wasted time, but they haven`t responded to this as yet (and I`m pretty sure they`ll say no anyway). If I refuse to send them back, are amazon legally entitled to charge me for them, even though they sent them out in error?

Probably I haven`t got a leg to stand on here and there`s a boring lunchtime of queuing awaiting me sometime this week, but I thought it was worth asking. People seem pretty clued up on here :)

RE: Missing Dr Who Story - Web of Fear found?????

This is what Mark Ayres of the Restoration Team had to say before locking the discussion thread:

At this point this is very much a rumour and I don`t think this forum is the place to discuss it. If and when we hear anything official, we`ll report it.

All I can say is that I, personally, have heard nothing.

Perhaps I should take this opportunity to reiterate that if anyone does have any information they should contact the BBC via the RT - we can immediately pass it on to those best-placed to deal with it. The email address is on our front page.

Thanks,

MArk.

Well, they`re not actually reporting that it HAS been found, just that it has been rumoured - best not to jump the gun!

Well, I think I made it clear that it was probably best not to get too excited just yet with the question marks in the heading and by saying:

Quote:

I don`t think any Who fans should get too excited just yet, but it would be wonderful if it were true.

(Not to mention the inverted commas around the word "story" in the link to Dr Who Online`s news page.)

I can`t see anything on the Restoration Team`s site. Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

RE: No Dr Who in 2009...

I just wish all three of the 2009 specials weren`t being written by RTD. If we had one by him, plus a Moffat & a maybe something more by Paul Cornell, then things wouldn`t look so bad for 2009.

Missing Dr Who Story - Web of Fear found?????

Dr Who Online are reporting that the (mostly) missing Patrick Troughton story, The Web of Fear, has been found. I don`t think any Who fans should get too excited just yet, but it would be wonderful if it were true.

"Story" here.

RE: The Doctor is back at last!

I know this is sad and fangirlish of me, but a lot of the pictures shown don`t seem to match the stories listed (e.g The Caves of Androzani has a picture from Four to Doomsday next to it; The Deadly Assassin is illustrated by a publicity picture for Logopolis; The Three Doctors has a picture from The Two Doctors and so on).

Personally I`d have preferred a lot more classic Who, especially stories as yet unreleased on DVD, given that the New Series already gets a lot of repeat showings on Beeb Three and comes out on DVD more or less instantly. And why only show a couple of episodes from The Chase & Inferno (if the stories were too long at six and seven episodes respectively then why not show two shorter stories in their entirety). And why isn`t there a proper Patrick Troughton story? He`s great in the two multi-Doctor stories they`re showing, but surely he still deserves a story of his own.

Sorry, I appear to have joined the Carnival of Moansters :D

If any of the recordings are f***ed up, then I think you can watch most of the stories on you tube.

Aliens.

This one`s a bit more obscure (I think):

She`s under arrest, Mr. Brown.
What`s the charge?
Homicide.
That`s ridiculous, she wouldn`t kill a fly.
She tried to kill herself
Is that a crime?
It happens to be against two laws: God`s and Man`s. I`m booking her under the second,

One good option for Doctor Who fans would be to preorder both The Key to Time boxset and The Time Warrior. With the 10% off, you`ll get The Key to Time for £40.44 and The Time Warrior for £10.65.

The Key to Time.
The Time Warrior.

RE: The Doctor is back at last!

I do agree, Rass. I think the Christmas Special suprised me with where it took the Doctor`s character and this "dark Doctor" was picked up later, especially at the end of The Family of Blood

"He never raised his voice, that was the worst thing, the fury of the Time Lord, and then we discovered why, why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he had run away and hidden...He was being kind."

I probably didn`t make it clear that I had enjoyed the Special. What I was trying to get across was the fact that I`d actually dreaded it because I`d got such little respect for Catherine Tate`s "talents" and yet it actually turned out alright. While obviously its impossible to hate Kylie, no one would claim she was ever the world`s greatest actress, but once again I`m hopeful that the Special will be enjoyable in spite of that. With any luck there won`t be any explicit reference to Christmas this time and it`ll just be a Special that happens to be on at Christmas.

And a Merry Christmas to all of you at home.

RE: The Doctor is back at last!

Apparently it`s been offically confirmed that Kylie Minogue is going to have a "major lead role" in the 2007 Christmas Special. I must admit I have a bad feeling about this, but the show has endured far worse (step forward Bonnie Langford) and, after all, Catherine Tate`s appearance wasn`t actually too bad, so fingers crossed.

Of course, coming on top of the Scissor Sisters song in the season finale, an appearance from Kylie does rather confirm the gay agenda theory :D

hope so because she was head & shoulders above BP

Yeah, Freema has been a breath of fresh air this season, but it seems pretty likely that she`s going to resurface next year as a part-time companion (presumably having moved on from the Doctor and maybe hooked up with that other sexy doc). There`s even been talk of her appearing in Torchwood as a semi-regular, which makes sense given the year she spent "walking the earth" (all very Kung Fu) and presumably acquiring lots of skills just to keep alive.

I`m probably dumb but I hadn`t even considered the notion the Toclafane were actually the last humans we`d seen in Utopia (I`d assumed some form of Cybermen or Daleks or maybe even remants of The Time Lords who somehow escaped the Time War and been corrupted by The Master - hence it would "break his hearts"). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it, although maybe making the Doctor into Gandalf and Gollum (or Dobby the house elf, if you prefer) in one episode was pushing things a bit far. I thought the Master`s death scene was great, although I was slightly worried it might turn into another bit from the Lord of the Rings with The Doctor going, "No Master....don`t die....don`t go where I can`t follow..."

We also learnt that the Master might be a Time Lord, but he`s still a typical bloke and was hoping to persuade his wife into a 3some :D

RE: 8 Re-released Classic Dr Who titles available for £6.99 each at HMV

Five of them are available slightly cheaper at taxfreeshopping.com (a site I`ve not used, so I`ve no idea if they have a good of bad reputation). Anyway, they have:

Spearhead from Space
Earthshock
The Five Doctors
Hand of Fear
Revelation of the Daleks.

All at £6.75 each.

RE: 8 Re-released Classic Dr Who titles available for £6.99 each at HMV

Hmm, it seems as if Sue`s idea of "cybersex" is slightly different to everyone else`s :D

There`s also a research assistant with a clipboard seen in the background of one of the scenes in episode 3, although I`m not sure I would`ve noticed her without the information text pointing it out to me. I`m rubbish at noticing those kind of goofs and continuity errors.

I`m probably going to buy Remembrance of the Daleks, although I don`t really care for Sly McCoy`s Doctor.

I think you can watch the whole of Earthshock on youtube if you want, Fred. Some naughty person appears to have uploaded it.

Somebody has also uploaded Fear Her. Don`t ask me why though: worst episode ever.

8 Re-released Classic Dr Who titles available for £6.99 each at HMV

From July 2nd, 2Entertain will re-release a number of DVDs aimed at bringing the classic series to a new audience.

For a limited period, the DVDs will be available at a lower price and with new packaging. The titles have been carefully chosen as stories that may appeal to fans of the new series, that have not already purchased classic Doctor Who DVDs.

The actual content of the DVDs will be identical to the previously released version.

The eight stories to be re-released are:

Spearhead from Space (3rd Doctor)
Genesis of the Daleks (4th Doctor)
The Hand of Fear (4th Doctor)
Earthshock (5th Doctor)
The Five Doctors (the first 5 Doctors - Kind of!)
Revelation of the Daleks - (6th Doctor)
Remembrance of the Daleks (7th Doctor)
The TV Movie (8th Doctor)

These are already available for pre-order at HMV for £6.99, which is a very cheap way to get these stories if you don`t have any or all them already. Just click on the title to be taken the appropriate page on HMV`s site (I`m far too good to you people :D )

edit: I notice Revelation of the Daleks` listing says it stars Tom Baker. It doesn`t. Unfortunately HMV have confused their Bakers!

RE: The Doctor is back at last!

I did think this episode was slightly treading water and didn`t quite match the brilliance of Utopia, but I have faith (hope?) that the finale will be right back up there.

I did wonder if a hundred years of aging would be enough to make the Doctor look that old. The 4th Doctor aged 500 years in The Leisure Hive, didn`t he, and appeared to have physically aged to a similar extent to the 10th Doctor (although the 4th Doctor also seemed to suffer senile decay)? I`ve always assumed that Time Lords age very slowly in comparison to humans and that`s the other reason (along with regeneration obviously) that they`re so long-lived. Wasn`t the 1st Doctor supposed to be several centuries old when his body finally gave out and he needed to regenerate.

The in-joke dismissal of the idea that The Master might be The Doctor`s brother was great. "You watch far too much television."
