Breathtaking

Not an easy watch but new 3 part series on ITV (available on ITVX) started last night - based during the rise of Covid pandemic and puts us right in the frontline.  If anyone waivers for a second about the support our doctors need at this time, a few minutes of this should put pay to that.
I read something along the lines of this could and should do for our frontline health workers what Mr Bates vs the Post Office did for the sub-postmasters and mistresses - and based on the first episode I just watched, I know exactly what it meant.

"I think they left as much as needed."
The more I think about it the more I think how they wasted precious time on crap (the Russian bride served what purpose?) that could have been so much better spent explaining other things - like tongues on the floor, SPOILER:
killer cleaners
, fits, voices and ghosts.  Or leaving them out altogether.

Previous True Detective series had strong detective leads certainly and there have been many other shows with a similar premise.  This certainly had two great leads too.
I just felt this thought it had that premise so crowbar a few links and Easter eggs in to justify the name.
It probably would have actually got more leeway had it just been a 6 part thriller cop series, unlinked to what had gone previously.
Still, stories are stories....

RE: [VIDEO] True Detective

Overall I thought it was 'OK' but could and should have been soooo much better.
It started to remind me of Lost mid way through where I was starting to think they've introduced so much and so many questions the finale is gonna be amazing but in the end they just didn't bother for most of the things they brought up.
eg...
the whole supernatural thing - why?  Danvers didn't believe any of it but sometimes seemed to see/sense things but it was all brushed aside and not explained.
'She's awake....' - what was that all about - and his 'fit'?
the tongue - erm, what and why?
link to S1 - Travis was Rust's dad, spirals etc. - why bother adding any of that and doing zero with it?
so, SPOILER:
other than the cleaners did it - and wow, how they all managed to keep a secret for so many years!
, how did they actually die - specifically thinking of being terrified before they died - the vet etc.?
the way they somehow found the caves so quickly unaided that then happened to be pretty much directly underneath the Research Station... it was so easy to find you need to wonder the point of the Heiss character and why he needed to be killed?  Also, what was the point of the other guy they went to visit in the little settlement?

Ultimately, I think it was just OK, as above, but tagged on the 'True Detective' badge to get those viewing figures up!

RE: Steve Wright :( afternoon over

Yeah, such sad news. Great DJ, loved Steve Wright in the Afternoon way back when.
Bobby 'traffic' Pryor was in bits trying to do the traffic around half five tonight on R2 after hearing the news.
Time for some serious jockin'..
RIP Steve

RE: The King has cancer

I'm not aware it's prostate cancer he has but nice to see he's started his treatment the same day.
My mate was diagnosed just before Christmas. He's got 8 weeks more to wait for Chemo. 🤬😭

I think 'that mucky farm program that Clarkson has' is brilliant!
I know quite a few people who can't stand Clarkson but love Clarkson's Farm.

[VIDEO] All Of Us Strangers

Saw this last night, absolutely brilliant.  Two really great performances especially.
Not totally sure about a couple of things, will need to read up - but I'm not sure we're supposed to 'know' and they're deliberately 'open' to let you decide.  Great soundtrack too!
Anyone seen it?

They already did win the Premier League. Fingers crossed he does it again.
Won every thing there is to win.

RE: [VIDEO] Reacher

Thought this was 'OK' and nowhere near as good as S1.
The gang on a pure vengeance-filled, cold blooded murder/execution mission wasn't really the style or character of the book and the chance at the end SPOILER:
where they choose to kill the engineer instead of freeing him as his daughter was being threatened (as in the book) was a missed opportunity and another example of this instead of showing a more human, redeeming side...
All of the teams' ability to instantly recover from being stabbed and even shot was pushing it a bit much too, some of the thickest plot armour I've seen....

RE: [VIDEO] Society of the Snow (Netflix)

Watched this yesterday. It was much better than Alive I thought and using a race-appropriate cast added somewhat to the authenticity. However, I'm not totally sure it added too much from the 'original' and quite a bit of it seemed shot for shot the same as I remembered. Both films steer clear somewhat from the real horror of what they did and I'm totally OK with that, eating what looked like chicken and seeing a rib cage right at the end is more than enough. The ending of this was much better than alive. The stone throwing scene accurate and the physical condition of the survivors much more accurately portrayed than in the shiny Hollywood gloss of Alive..
Maybe another 5 or 10 minutes or credits information would have added something lacking from Alive too. What happened next? How did family, friends and the media react to what happened? How were they themselves psychologically? etc..

RE: Mr Bates vs The Post Office

The lengths they were prepared to go to knowingly tell barefaced lies, spread misinformation and threaten people is astonishing.
A lengthy but worthwhile article here.
BBC News - Post Office lied and threatened BBC over Horizon whistle-blower.

RE: Mr Bates vs The Post Office

I'm not sure there's much of a non-human element here to be honest.
It's not AI.
The application was coded by humans. Humans knew there were big issues with it. Humans told other humans they were the only ones with the problem. Humans covered more and more up while other humans were literally killing themselves. I'm really not sure there was too much 'unnerring faith' in the system, they knew damn well there were problems and covered it up.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office

Only two episodes in but going through every emotion under the sun, primarily f***in' anger.
Anyone else watching/watched?
Amazing performances and script telling a truly heartbreaking true story in yet another great miscarriage of justice of our time.

RE: [VIDEO] Arsenal 23/24 season

Other way around I'd be gutted.  So many chances first half it was ridiculous - some real 'on a plate' ones too.  Shearer, still sulking from us beating his side last week, was desperate for you to score.  He doesn't get if you miss 3 chances in one go it doesn't mean you should be 3-0 but he didn't let that stop him going on.
Thought we played so well in the second half and made some nice changes too.

RE: Microsoft announces AI key on Windows 11 PCs

The scary thing is while ChatGPT etc. is programmed to not lie etc. and the example Pete gave needed human intervention to allow it to do certain things, there are many bad actors on the planet (including states) with no such reservations or limitations so them asking their AI to  'Write me a virus to attack X, Y, Z and cause maximum damage' etc. is a very real and present danger to us all.  The more 'freedom' they're (the AI engine) given, the potential for damage and harm increases exponentially.
Yet, there's no stopping this train now.

RE: Microsoft announces AI key on Windows 11 PCs

Non-life changing for some is life changing for others though.
Some may be OK with it 'just' making art but the artists who have trained for years and suddenly have no work as AI is creating the games covers or whatever won't be.
I just remembered another thing AI did for me - write some Python code that I just couldn't get right.  Yep, it did it first time.  So coders too...

Hopefully you'll trust the drugs it will have created in the future to cure some ailment or other though....
It is astonishing and absolutely terrifying at the same time.
I've done some messing it about with it for sure, such as:

  • doing me a 5 day itinerary for Dubai.  Scarily good and you can just 'talk' to it and make tweaks like 'I'd prefer to do something a bit more xxx on the Wednesday afternoon.' and it just understands context and everything and gets on with it instantly.
  • painting me a picture of whatever I ask.
  • solve a maths/physics problem
For example, I just said now as a test to 'paint me a picture of the Liverpool skyline in an impressionist style'.  This is what it did.

Think for a moment what's happened here.  It's understood what the key points are, what is Liverpool, the key points of the skyline and what an art style is and how to apply it.  5 minutes ago this image didn't exist..
As I said [EDIT, just noticed Pete did too!], terrifying..

We probably need a thread on AI.  Maybe I'll ask it to create one.

May have got lucky with the handball... 🤣🤣. That was farcical to not give.
Not sure if you're serious about a pen for Havertz?
Similar to Utd last week, poor finishing cost us 2 points again, a big 4 points down there.
Klopp obviously didn't realise how bad Timmy was but no issues with the push here, it's a contact sport.

Yes, both were great.  Shame we couldn't have Bob Mortimer on WILTY again, I love how David just can't read him.  It was great having him and his wife, Victoria, on the same team.
