Police officer Malcolm Toohey (Joel Edgerton) has it all—a loving wife, beautiful children and a reputation for being an outstanding detective. But it only ever takes a single moment to change a life forever…
One night following a successful drug bust Toohey and his team hit a bar for drinks, he has cheated death and it requires celebrating. Several drinks and many hours later Toohey decides to drive the short distance home - it will be a decision that will change everything… on the way home he knocks down a young boy severely injuring him. Toohey desperately fights to save the boys life until the ambulance arrives. Driven by fear he lies to the paramedics, claiming he found the boy on the road. But Toohey knows better than anyone once one lie is told, it will lead to a spiraling descent into lie after lie.
Wracked with guilt Toohey confides in his senior officer Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson). Carl’s instinct is to protect Toohey and the force so he advises him to continue the lie, and commits to helping him cover up the truth. But when rookie officer Jim Melic (Jai Courtney) enters the picture he begins to see the cracks in Toohey’s story, he has a point to prove and a career to make so he attacks the case with vigor, putting himself on a collision course with his superiors.
As the three detectives become embroiled in a tense psychological struggle, every notion they have ever held of justice, guilt and innocence will be shattered. How far will they go to protect and reveal the truth?
