In his first major starring role, Hugh Grant gives a compelling performance as a young Edwardian gentleman torn apart by a homosexual love affair, in `Maurice`.

Two male students at Cambridge University meet and fall in love. Because of society and his fear of being arrested, Clive (Hugh Grant) denies his homosexuality. He breaks his relationship with Maurice (James Wilby) and marries a woman. But then Maurice finds Alec (Rupert Graves), a servant of Clive`s.

Forbidden love and the class divide are the powerful central themes of Maurice, Merchant Ivory Productions` adaptation of E.M. Forster`s controversial novella detailing a passion which links three young men from very different backgrounds who are forced to come to terms with their sexuality.

The movie is beautifully filmed, scripted, acted and directed. It is filled with all the qualities that Merchant Ivory is famous for, beautiful visuals, wonderful music and completely accessible. The movie is an adaptation of E M Forster`s only gay romance. It was only published after his death. It deals with Maurice`s self discovery of his sexuality, society`s homophobia and hypocrisy, and the realisation that even in the face of losing all the benefits from conforming to society`s demand; money, position, reputation....... a love between two beings, between a man and another man is ultimately more important. It must surely have the most romantic and natural depiction of gay love.

The DVD transfer is very clean and sharp. The audio transfer is very good. It is in widescreen, unlike previous VHS version that was in pan and scan. The additional features are limited. Would have liked to have seen included more interviews with James Wilby regarding his role, and other media events specifically generated by the movie, and not only just the promo for the aniversary of the Merchant Ivory.

If you haven`t seen this, I truly recommend it, and if you have, this is the DVD to get.
