It had been less than a year since man first walked on the moon, but as far as the American public was concerned, Apollo 13 was just another "routine" space flight--until these words pierced the immense void of space: "Houston, we have a problem." Ron Howard directs Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks in a riveting suspense-thriller. Stranded 205,000 miles from earth in a crippled spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert fight a desperate battle to survive. Meanwhile, at Mission Control, astronaut Ken Mattingly, flight director Gene Kranz and a heroic ground crew race against time--and the odds--to bring them home. It`s a breathtaking adventure that tells a story of courage, faith and ingenuity that is all the more remarkable because it is true!

This is my 500th review for this site. :)
This is the very first time I got a chance to watch the movie on DVD, having watched it twice in the past (in theater and on TV).
The movie tells the (now) well known story of Apollo 13 and its crew, and yeah, it still delivers, even after all these years.
The video transfer is very good. There are no compression signs at all and the colors are beautifully saturated. The movie manages to keep a unique 1970`s look, without trying to be too extravagant (after all - these were "simpler times").
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is very good. There`s a constant usage of the surrounds, but (surprisingly enough), not in an overwhelming manner.
The menus are still and silent.
The extras include a commentary by the director and real-life astronaut and some production notes.
Bottom line - despite the near lack of extras, this is a solid and very enjoyable movie.
