After the overrated "American Beauty", drector Sam Mendes bounces back with this stirring tale of Fathers & Sons. Playing against type, Hanks a mob hitman who goes on the run with his oldest son.

Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, this is an excellent presentation of Conrad L. Hall`s cinematography.Colors are rich and well defined. Minor film grain is noticed, but this intentional. Some edge-enhancement is noticed, but this is a shining transfer from DreamWorks.

The film`s Oscar nominated sound design is given appropiate treament with the Dolby Digital 5.1 track supplied.Tom Newman`s score sounds terrific, as do the tommy guns. The LFE is given a real workout when Calvino is visited by Sullivan.

Although not a full blown special edition, what`s supplied here is fairly decent. Mendes provides a pretty interesting commentary, with few pauses. For those like to read, the commentary is availible in subtitle form. 11 deleted scenes are included, and they are worth watching. My favorite scene was one featuring Al Capone. Each scene includes optional Menes commentary. There is also a 25 minute HBO making of.Most of these HBO pieces are pure fluff, but this one is particulary interesting. To round things off, there are cast & crew bios,a photo gallery, and a CD advertisment.

A road well worth the journey.
