The lush beauty and splendor of a South Pacific paradise is vividly captured in this version of Henry DeVere Stacpoole`s 1903 novel. Two small children and a ship`s cook survive a shipwreck and find safety on an idyllic tropical island. Soon, however, the cook dies and the young boy and girl are left on their own.

Days become years and Emmeline (Brooke Shields) and Richard (Christopher Atkins) make a home for themselves surrounded by exotic creatures and nature`s beauty. They learn to cope with the bewildering variety of physical and emotional changes that come with adolescence. And as they begin to mature, their childhood affections lead to a sensitive and more profound love and the birth of a child.

But will they ever see civilization again?

This is my 300th review for this site. :)
I was 7 going 8 when my mom took me and my sister to see "The Blue Lagoon" in the theater. Despite my young age, the movie had remained in my mind for years and years. Later on in life, as a teenager, I looked back to it in a very nostalgic way.
It`s been at least 15 years since I saw it for the last time on TV, so naturally I was overwhelmed with joy when I heard about its DVD. I immediately bough it.
The video transfer is very good, considering the fact that the movie is more than 20 years old. There are no compression signs to be seen and the colors are bright and nicely saturated. The movie has obviously been restored, since it is quite clean of scratches and blemishes (look at the featurette and realize just how bad a 20 year-old movie can look like). The cinematography of Néstor Almendros is superb. The incredible beaches of Fiji come alive like never before. Shields and Atkins are an incredible combination.
The DD 3.1 soundtrack is very good. The surrounds are actually a mono channel, but the front channels and the center channel are doing a great job, considering the fact that this movie does not rely on its audio.
The menus are still and silent.
The extras include 2 wonderful commentaries by the director, the writer and the 2 leads, a short (and awful looking) featurette and a photo gallery.
Bottom line - this movie has everything - adventure, beautiful scenes and romance. It`s quite erotic (yet never pornographic), beautifully acted by Shields (who was 14 when it was shot) and Atkins (who was 18) and is bound to make you daydream about being washed ashore a beautiful island. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
